How Long Does an MVV Visa Take in the Netherlands?
For many ordinary partner and initial highly skilled migrant applications, the IND decision period is 90 days, while higher-education study applications have a 60-day period. A complete study application from a recognised sponsor may meet a two-week target, but that is not a guaranteed travel timeline. After approval, allow separately for an embassy appointment and up to 10 working days for the MVV visa sticker, with extensions and local arrangements affecting the overall wait (IND decision periods, official sticker-processing guidance).

Key rules
Identify your residence route before choosing a decision period.
The ordinary IND clock starts when the IND receives the application.
A faster processing target is different from a legal deadline.
Appointment scheduling comes before sticker processing.
A positive decision still requires follow-up arrangements.
An MVV, short for machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf, is the long-stay entry visa used in relevant Dutch residence procedures. In the combined entry and residence procedure, commonly called TEV, the application concerns both the MVV and the residence permit. The IND partner application guidance illustrates this combined approach.
The question “how long does MVV take?” can therefore describe several different waits: preparing a file, obtaining the IND decision, arranging the sticker appointment, receiving the passport, and travelling. Keeping these stages separate makes an estimate useful.
A university saying that it is checking your documents may mean the application is still being prepared. An employer reporting approval may mean the next task is an embassy appointment. Ask what has actually happened and request the relevant confirmation.
First establish whether an MVV is required at all. Nationality and individual circumstances can affect this assessment; consult the IND MVV exemption guidance. An exemption does not itself settle all residence requirements.
IND decision times by residence route
Partner and ordinary family residence
The ordinary partner route has a 90-day decision period, with possible extensions. Asylum family reunification follows different rules and should not be planned using the ordinary partner timetable. Check the correct category on the IND partner residence page.
For planning, discuss two questions separately: is the application ready, and when is a decision legally due? A complete document pack helps avoid preventable follow-up work, but it cannot turn a deadline into a promised approval date.
Highly skilled migrant employment
For an initial highly skilled migrant application, the published decision period is 90 days. The IND highly skilled migrant instructions explain the employer-led application.
The IND’s recognised-sponsor employer guidance also describes decisions often being made within two weeks when direct debit is used. Read that as faster administrative handling in the described circumstances, rather than a guaranteed date for every applicant.
Do not borrow the timeline from a Blue Card, employer change or another work category. Ask the employer to identify the actual permit being requested before agreeing on a relocation schedule.
University and higher professional education
The institution submits the higher-education student application, which has a 60-day decision period. The official student residence instructions explain its role. The separate decision-period overview gives a two-week target for complete recognised-sponsor study applications.
For a student, the practical action is to obtain the submission date from the international office. Sending your papers to the university and the university submitting them to the IND are distinct milestones.
From IND approval to the sticker in your passport
Approval moves the process to the consular stage. Use the official country selector for MVV applications and the representation identified in your instructions. Do not assume a procedure described for another country applies to you.
NetherlandsWorldwide states that obtaining the passport back with the sticker can take up to 10 working days after applying for the sticker. The passport is handed in for that process. See how long MVV sticker processing takes.
Budget time for the appointment before counting those working days. Keep passport-dependent travel flexible and check how collection or delivery will work. When planning around a public holiday, use the representation’s local instructions rather than treating working days as ordinary calendar days.
Save the approval letter somewhere accessible. A clear folder containing the decision, appointment confirmation and required documents is more useful than scattered screenshots of different stages.
Applying in Türkiye: a separate appointment stage
The official Türkiye MVV page says appointment scheduling may take 10–15 working days. This concerns arranging the appointment; it does not promise that the appointment itself will occur within that period.
The same instructions distinguish the contact channels by location and residence purpose. Follow the appropriate channel, check spam folders and retain the request and confirmation. Do not interpret an unanswered request as a booked appointment.
This country example is relevant to applicants using the Turkish representations, regardless of nationality. People applying elsewhere should use their own country’s instructions. Turkish nationality also raises separate legal questions: the IND guidance for Turkish citizens explains that some conditions may differ, without creating a universal accelerated MVV route.
Why a file may take longer
The applicable period can change if more information or investigation is needed. The IND explains extensions in its decision-period guidance. Read every case-specific notice before concluding that a deadline has expired.
Prepare a file that another person can understand
Use the current checklist for your route and make the evidence easy to navigate. A simple document index can show which attachment answers which question. If a name or date appears differently across documents, identify the discrepancy early and ask how it should be addressed.
Keep a dated record of submissions and requests. When further material is requested, note the response deadline, the precise question and the method of sending the answer. Retain proof of delivery or upload.
These are practical organisational measures, not a shortcut to a favourable decision. Avoid sending repeated versions merely because the file feels quiet. First work out whether the sponsor or representative already has a request awaiting a response.
Tracking your application and an overdue decision
Where you have the required access, My IND allows you to follow the application. Sponsors may also receive important correspondence, so agree who will monitor messages and share updates.
A short status label cannot supply all the information in the acknowledgment or an extension notice. Build your timeline from those documents and distinguish a hoped-for response date from the applicable deadline.
If the decision period has expired, the IND late-decision procedure explains a notice of default, called ingebrekestelling. If no decision follows within two weeks of receipt, an appeal concerning failure to decide may be possible. The official instructions specify valid sending methods.
Do not assume a notice automatically generates compensation. The IND’s judicial-penalties explanation states that administrative penalties were abolished for default notices filed on or after 15 April 2025; court-related penalties are a separate matter. Obtain case-specific advice before relying on older online explanations.
Plan travel around the right dates
The sticker’s validity is distinct from the decision period and the appointment stage. NetherlandsWorldwide explains that the MVV is valid for 90 days from issue and that travel and residence-permit collection must fit within that window. Check the printed dates and the official MVV validity guidance.
Keep a planning sheet with the following milestones:
Date the application reached the IND.
Decision deadline stated in the correspondence, adjusted for applicable notices.
Date and instructions in the positive decision.
Confirmed sticker appointment and passport-return arrangements.
Sticker dates and residence-document collection arrangements.
Hypothetical example: an employee coordinating a start date
Suppose an employer expects a quick decision and proposes a start soon afterwards. The employee should ask whether that date allows for the sticker appointment, passport return and travel. The employer and employee can then discuss a workable contingency if one stage moves.
Treat the proposed date as a planning assumption until the relevant steps are confirmed. Also check the actual work authorisation rather than assuming that an approval message alone answers every employment question.
Hypothetical example: a student waiting for submission
Suppose a student sends documents to a university on Monday, but the institution requests a correction before filing. The useful question is when the completed application actually reached the IND. Separately, the student should ask the university about its latest arrival arrangements if the immigration schedule conflicts with the course start.
Neither example describes a real client or predicts a processing result.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 90-day IND period include the embassy appointment?
No. Treat the residence decision and subsequent sticker arrangements as separate stages. The MVV country instructions govern the consular step after approval.
Is a two-week MVV decision guaranteed?
No. A target or description of faster handling does not guarantee the outcome or the travel date. Compare your route with the IND decision-period overview, then read your case correspondence.
Does sending documents to my university start the IND clock?
The ordinary decision period starts on IND receipt, not merely delivery to an intermediary. Ask the institution for confirmation; the student application process identifies it as the submitting party.
Can I keep my passport during sticker processing?
The official sticker guidance says you hand it in. Plan around its temporary unavailability and discuss any special logistical issue directly with the representation.
How long do I have after a positive decision?
For the ordinary work, study and partner routes discussed here, IND instructions require making the appointment within three months of the decision; see the partner route’s post-approval instructions. Follow the specific letter and country guidance promptly; this is a different period from the sticker’s 90-day validity after issue.
What if my appointment request receives no reply?
Check the published local process and your spam folder before following up through the stated channel. For Türkiye, the official instructions explain that scheduling is not immediate. Preserve evidence of timely contact if a deadline is approaching.
Discuss your MVV timeline with DYC Legal Consultancy
If your job, studies or family move depends on an uncertain timeline, prepare the acknowledgment, any extension or document-request letters, and your planned dates. These make a consultation more focused: which stage is pending, which deadline applies and what action is useful now?
This article provides general information, not individual legal advice. The relevant route, conditions and official guidance must be checked when you apply or take action. Sources checked: 17 October 2026.
